Dreams are more like aspirations, the bedrock of what we want to be, achieve or accomplish today, soon, or in the future. Have you ever sat to think about something you’d like to accomplish? Yes or no?

It’s what they call daydreaming or maybe fantasies. A dream is something that is pleasing to you, the driving force of your life (something that keeps you going).

Do you know that family and society can oppose or undervalue that yet to be an established dream? You know, while I was growing up as a child, I’ve always loved to write. I wanted to be a freelancer and an author so bad, I’d get a pen and paper and scribble anything, whether it made sense or not.

When I got into college, I would sign up for any competition that involved writing, heck I love it. Am not sure a day went by without me having to pen down something, I could communicate with just a pen and paper, it seemed like these two understood me quite a lot- there was a connection.

Though my mother wanted me to follow a different path, “science”. She admired anyone who wore a clean and dazzling white laboratory coat.

According to her, “She did not mind waking up every day to see me on a laboratory coat”. My mum gave concrete reasons on a daily basis why I should study science and become a surgeon rather than holding a pen, writing.

it pays more, you will be well respected, the world will acknowledge your existence and it would make me proud as your mother and blah blah blah.

Trust me, we had a series of arguments most times, she’d even threaten to stop paying my tuition fee, it got to this extent. But no one, except myself, could understand the love I had for writing.

I wanted to touch lives with my writing, inspire people with my books, explain hidden facts to people and so much more. Guess what, against all the odds and obstacles, I followed my dreams.

I pursued my goal with all manner of enthusiasm. I get calls and emails every day from people, they say “ hey, was going through a lot, your book touched me, this essay changed me, you are amazing and I look forward to reading your next piece, article, or book”. When my mum read one of my books, she was wowed.

What am I trying to imply?? You don’t have to follow someone’s footsteps or let them define you because they perceive your dream as rubbish or a waste of precious time and effort.

You don’t have to live up to anybody’s perception or expectations. You have a good dream, an amazing one, go for it.

Let your dreams be your aspirations, let it be birthed in your heart while you work hard towards giving it life. Don’t create chances for others to look down on that special dream, let it manifest.

People trying to distract you from fulfilling your dreams is a sign that they don’t have a future for themselves, they don’t want you to progress because of jealousy, mind who you allow into your circle to give you advise on what to do.

Your dream is your dream, not theirs, pursue it as if your life depends on it, never relent.

I Still have big dreams, everybody does. We’ve thought about it repeatedly. Your dreams should motivate you to be better, to work harder.

  • “People who lack the clarity, courage or determination to follow their own dreams will often find ways to discourage yours. Love your truth and don’t ever stop!” -Steve Maraboli

Indeed, anyone that despises your quest to follow your dreams lacks the determination to follow their own dreams. They simply lack the zeal and power you have.

They want you to be on the same level as them, they never want you to emerge and some of them will use anything within their power to stop you. Don’t ever stop working hard. Relenting shouldn’t be an option.

  • “There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure”. -Paulo Coelho

Try moving out of your comfort zone to create a life you really want  and you will realize that there is no fear after all.

  • “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream”- C.S. Lewis

Regardless of age or level, you can dream and set new goals, there is no limit to it. Age is not a barrier, whether you have accomplished thousands of dreams, it is not enough reason to back down or stop.
